Nick Wales

Nick Wales is a Sydney based composer who works across contemporary dance, popular music, film, theatre, fashion and new classical music.  His music is a hybrid between classical forms, electronic and popular music. Nick’s undergraduate studies in Music Composition were completed at Sydney University under Peter Sculthorpe and Ross Edwards; he holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Film Music Composition from AFTRS.

Nick is a Founding Member and Co-Composer of CODA, a critically acclaimed musical group which incorporates classical styling with contemporary rock and electronica. He has collaborated with choreographer Shaun Parker on numerous dance theatre works including Happy as Larry (with Bree van Reyk), The Yard, This Show is About People, Spill and Trollys (an award-winning shopping trolly ballet).

Nick’s music was featured as part of Brisbane Festival’s Santos City of Lights in 2011 and he was the Musical Director for the 2009 Fire Water event set on Sydney Harbour featuring CODA. Other commissions include The Sydney Symphony, Matchbox Pictures, Stvdio TV (station IDs), Anton, the NRL, Sydney Children’s Choir, Bell Shakespeare Company, Romance Was Born, Dion Lee and Akira Isogawa. Nick recently composed the soundtrack for the feature film Around the Block directed by Sarah Spillane and starring Christina Ricci, due for release in 2013.

Nick’s other collaborative interests include working with performance artist Justin Shoulder and contributing to the alternative cabaret performance events of the Sydney collective The Glitter Militia.

Nick has previously worked with Sarah Blasko in Sweden and Bulgaria, writing orchestral arrangements for her latest album I Awake2 One Another was Nick’s first collaboration with Sydney Dance Company and he has since worked on Rafael Bonachela’s Emergence with Sarah Blasko.
